Abstract

Damage by Callosobruchus maculatus to seeds of bengal gram [Cicer arietinum], black gram [Vigna mungo], black-eyed cowpea [V. unguiculata], green gram [V. radiata], kabli gram [C. arietinum], red and spotted bean [Phaseolus vulgaris], lentils, moth beans [V. aconitifolia], red gram [Cajanus cajan] and rice beans [V. umbellata] was studied under natural storage conditions in India. Females preferred V. radiata, V. unguiculata and V. aconitifolia for oviposition. V. unguiculata had the greatest damage in terms of exit holes (69.2%) and weight loss (34.5%), followed by V. aconitifolia (53.7 and 21.9%) and V. radiata (50.3 and 19.4%). No damage to V. umbellata was recorded, although 40.3% of seeds had eggs.
