The characteristics of wild plant species (and associated pathogens), their evaluation and management as a genetic resource and their use as sources of disease resistance in crop improvement are reviewed with emphasis placed on major food crops. Some of the advantages and problems of using wild germplasm in breeding programmes are outlined
