Abstract

Partially opened vegetative quadrifoliate leaf buds (terminals) of peanut [groundnut] (Arachis hypogaea) varieties with varying resistance to Cercosporidium personatum and the insects Frankliniella fusca and Empoasca fabae were analyzed for their polyphenolic content. All varieties contained only 1 major polyphenol, which was isolated and identified as 2,3-di-(E)-caffeoyl-(2R)-(+)-tartaric acid (levorotatory chicoric acid). Concn of l-chicoric acid were highest in newly emerged terminals (0.25% fresh wt) of Florunner (susceptible to C. personatum) and Southern Runner (resistant) varieties and showed a steady decline (to 0.019%) as the leaves matured over 18 days. Concn of chicoric acid did not correlated with resistance to C. personatum, F. fusca or E. fabae
