Abstract

In the 1974/75 crop year which ended last June 1/, wheat and coarse grains production amounted to 1,004 million tons, 4% lower than the record 1973/74 level. Rice production, estimated at 216 million tons (milled basis), was marginally higher (1%) than in 1973/74, despite the weak monsoon. The global situation, however, was less critical than these figures appear to convey. For, while the main part of the crop shortfall was for the coarse grains, a sharp and simultaneous fall in the demand for feed grains in the industrialised nations, permitted a substantial easing in the global supply situation. In addition, the grain crop shortfalls of 1974/75 were borne by the developed and centrally planned countries, whereas in the developing regions (with the exception of India) there was a marked improvement. Reflecting the greater export availability of rice in 1974/75, rice prices declined throughout the crop year and by the end of the season a competitive situation was re-emerging in the international markets. Wheat and coarse grain prices, which had begun to fall in the spring of 1974, continued to decline until the fall, when following the release of lower crop estimates and the announcement of the USSR purchases, prices rose again rather sharply. By early 1975 price declines had resumed. Prices of wheat, maize and rice in the second quarter of 1975 were respectively 43%, 11% and 4o% lower than at their peak in the spring of 1974.
