The Central Soil Salinity Research Institute started functioning at Karnal in November, 1969 and acquired an area of about 40.5 hectares for the purpose of field experimentation. Another 40 hectares of adjacent land was brought under the Institute's control in the year 1971. Some portions of the land out of this area had been lying uncultivated for the last 70 to 80 years due to the accumulation of excess soluble salts and exchangeable sodium in the soil profile. This land represents several such areas in the states of Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and elsewhere. Several efforts have been made in the past to characterise the saline-sodic soils of this region (Sen, 1953 ; Kanwar and Sehgal, 1962; Kanwar and Bhumbla, 1969). The objective of the present investigation was to prepare an inventory of the soils of the farm after study ing their morphological and physico-chemical characteristics as are significant from the point of view of management and for the purpose of mapping and genetic classification.
