Abstract

The Expert Consultation on the Development of Food Marketing Systems for Large Urban Areas in Asia and Far East was held in Kuala Lampur, Malaysia, from 24 March to 2 April 1975. The objective of the Consultation were to analyse the changes needed to adjust the food marketing systems to present and future requirements of the rapidly expanding large urban areas, and to formulate strategies for developing efficient food marketing systems suitable for different levels of economic deveolopment and conditions. Case studies on thirteen large cities (Tokyo, Seoul, Hong Kong, Manila, Kuala Lumpur, Djakarta, sydney, Bangkok, Singapore, Colombo, New Delhi, Bombay, Dacca) formed the major basis for detailed analyses and proposal for ection which included th following recommendations. to improve the planning of new retail and wholesale markets; to strengthen the coordination of relevant agencies and departments involved in food marketing; to activate marketing education and trainning programmes with the objective of improving marketing management practices; to establish national marketing developments centres offering applied research, training and demostration services in Asian countries, coordinated by an FAO expanded regional marketing programme
