The good performance of varieties in a large number of yield trials may give one an idea of their relative superiority but this would not necessarily reflect their ability to produce better combinations when crossed with a number of similar lines. Ahluwalia (1962), Ahluwalia and Patnaik (1963) and Gupta and Singh (1967) emphasized the role of genetic diversity in the choice of good combining parents when attempting a number of intervarietal crosses. The present study, was, therefore, undertaken to have an idea of the nature of combining ability for grain yield and other grain and plant characters when crosses were made between a number of lines selected from the world germplasm with a number of genetically diverse male steriles.
