An assessment of the divergence for ten characters including seven grain characteristics among twenty four diverse parents of cultivated sorghums was done by multivariate analysis. An analysis of generation means was carried out for protein, lysine and sucrose in three crosses. Of the ten chacraters studied, grain size followed by protein content, lysine, endosperm texture and leucine accounted for most of the divergence between the varieties studied. This confirmed that characters for grain quality are as important as those related to fitness in the evolution of cultivated sorghums. The clustering pattern of varieties did not follow their geographic distribution. The clusters which contained varieties having high protein content also showed wide intercluster divergence. Hence an effective hybridization programme to produce hybrids superior in protein content should include varieties from different clusters having varieties containing high protein content. The absence of heterosis observed for grain quality is likely to be due to the limited number of crosses that were examined for the analysis of generation means. Among the main effects, dominance components and interactions involving dominance components were the largest for lysine and protein also. On the other hand the additive effect, and the dominance × dominance have reinforced each other for sucrose content.
