Seeds of 12 genotypes of Pennisetum americanum were used to study variation in water absorption rate, percentage and rate of germination, field emergence, seedling shoot length, root length, shoot DW, root DW and vigour index, electrical conductivity of leachate and protein content. High yielding cv. KM 2 and CO 6 gave highest germination values (99 and 100%, resp.). Vigour index was highest in cv. X 4 followed by KM 2 and CO 6. Cv. KM 2 had the greatest shoot and root DW and its seeds had the highest protein content (14.4%) and lowest leachate conductivity (24 µmho/cm). Vigour index was considered a very dependable criterion in screening for desirable P. americanum genotypes, and was postively correlated with germination rate and percentage and field emergence
