Red gram [Cajanus cajan] grown under rain-fed conditions in paired rows (45 + 75 cm) with 1 row of sorghum or 2 rows of bajra [Pennisetum americanum], black gram [Vigna mungo] or coriander as intercrops between the inter-strips of paired rows gave seed yields of 757, 694, 928 and 909 kg/ha, resp., compared with 958 kg in pure stands in rows 60 cm apart, indicating that V. mungo had no adverse effect on red gram yield
