Advances in microcomputer technology and software development have profound implications for agricultural research and extension. The portability and low cost of microcomputers make them particularly suitable for use in developing countries. Microcomputers are well-suited to perform repetitive, yet fairly complex, calculations in which errors are likely to be made, for example, investment analysis. Three broad approaches for microcomputer use in investment analysis are possible: * buy a prewritten program, * write a custom program, and * adopt a general spreadsheetprogram. The last option is most appropriate for many developing country situations because minimal computing expertise is required and computing flexibility is retained. Development of a spreadsheet program to facilitate rapid appraisal of small farm machinery is discussed and applications to separate design and extension prob!ems are outlined
