Cultivar blends of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) were evaluated to determine if there were any favorable competitive interactions for yield of seed or oil. In a 50:50 blend of ‘Gila’ and ‘12417’ there was an average over-compensation of 3.6% for seed yield and 3.9% for oil yield. For a 50:50 blend of ‘Dart’ and ‘1415430’ there was undercompensation for both seed and oil yield in the 1 year of testing. Generally, seed and oil yield of the blends did not exceed that of the better cultivar planted alone
